York-Hadrian's Wall-Falkirk-Oban

For those who remember "Heartbeat" in the Yorkshire moors.
IMG_6351.jpg
Whitby harbour. A seaside town on East Yorkshire coast.
IMG_6362.jpg
The minster in York. The second in command of the Anglican Church lives here.
IMG_6386.jpg
The wall and moat (now a grass ditch) surrounding York goes back to Roman times in the first century.
IMG_6373.jpg
York's most famous street. The Shambles. The inspiration for Harry Potter's Diagon Alley.
IMG_6384.jpg
Monster meringues.
IMG_6397.jpg
Roman emperor Hadrian built this defensive wall from east to west coasts of England.
IMG_6391.jpg
More wall.
IMG_6393.jpg

IMG_6409.jpg
Shows foundation of a "Milecastle". These were constructed at one mile intervals.
IMG_6395.jpg
We loved walking the wall.
IMG_6389.jpg
Scotland's number one tourist attraction "The Falkirk Wheel". A rotating boat lift 35 metres in diameter. It replaced 7 locks.

Here you can see the two large bath tubs in the wheel.
One has two long barges in it. The other is full of water of exactly the same weight. (Remember Archimedes principle)
When the two barges get to the top, the bathtub they're in is connected and sealed to the top canal.
The end of the bathtub then opens and the boats move into the canal.

The inside of another church. Now an artisan cafe. Great food and coffee on the way to Oban.
